The Chapel at the Royal Victoria Country Park
I paid a very enjoyable visit to the Royal Victoria Country Park recently to see the recently renovated chapel. This is well worth a visit. The exhibition is an excellent resource for learning more about the hospital and a climb up the tower leads to good views over Southampton Water and the surrounding area.
Small structures some distance from the chapel mark the corners of the original hospital, which was originally the world's largest building when it was first built. These structures help to give some idea of the scale of Netley Hospital (as it was called) when in use.
I was touched to learn about Queen Victoria’s compassion for the soldiers at the hospital, including taking the time to speak privately to those who were dying. The chapel and the park are looked after in part by a team of volunteers, who work hard to help and inform visitors and keep them safe. Please do visit our fantastic park and the beautiful chapel, especially in this historic centenary year.
